Facebook users give Like of Approval

Following the announcement on July 6 that Facebook had joined forces with Skype to provide integrated video calling on the social network, Skype's number of fans -- people who "like" the page - - has increased dramatically.

The partnership means that users of social networking site Facebook who have a webcam are able to chat via video link with their friends without leaving the site.

According to data from social media monitoring site Famecount, since the partnership was announced on July 6 the number of fans of Skype's Facebook page has increased by over 13,000. The data also show that on July 7 the brand was ranked 20th in terms of the number of new fans it gained in one day, and has experienced a daily growth in fans of 0.37 percent compared to the 0.11 percent growth rate average of all brands across Facebook.

The announcement by Facebook is widely seen as an attempt to counteract the buzz surrounding the launch of Google's social network Google Plus, access to which is currently on an invitation-only basis.
